Description

Profile: Valeriana officinalis is a relaxing Caprifoliaceae plant. Valerian's blooms and roots are sweet-smelling. Valerian root has been utilized since ancient Greece and in European folk medicine, despite its pungent odor. The roots are commonly steeped as valerian tea or tinctured.

Details:

Valerian promotes relaxation and reduces stress.

Valerian grows across Europe and Asia. It's naturalized in North America's damp, temperate meadows and woods. The 2-meter-tall plant produces white or pink flower clusters. Flowers smell delicious, unlike the plant's roots. The roots are picked and dried at temperatures below 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

The roots' strong odor has been compared to sweaty socks. Cats are drawn to the aroma like catnip, biting and rubbing on the root. The Pied Piper of Hamelin reportedly used valerian to lure rats out of town.
