Love-in-the-mist flowers are a beautiful garden plant with enormous sky blue blooms and lacy leaves. The culinary black seeds are from a species with cream-colored petals and fewer petals. (It's very dull.)

Nigella, black caraway, and kalonji seeds are all varieties of this plant's seeds. The seeds are small and dark. They are widely consumed in India, West Bengal, and Bangladesh. Grinding the seeds creates volatile oils that quickly deteriorate. The seeds are commonly used intact as a garnish for breads and curries.
