Profile: Ashwagandha Root, or Withania somnifera, is a five-foot-tall solanaceae shrub. This family includes tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and petunias. Ashwagandha root produces berry-sized, yellow blooms. The 8-12 inch roots are used as organic herbs.
Ashwagandha grows in Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Chad, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Swaziland), Asia (Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, India), and Europe (Greece, Italy, Spain). In these warm countries, Withania somnifera thrives. India supplies us bulk Ashwagandha root. India has developed Ashwagandha root types with bigger roots and the ability to live in harsher temperatures.
Roots are used most often, but berries, leaves, and fruit are sometimes employed.
