Bacopa monnieri grows in dense mats in marshes and along riverbanks, and it's grown as an ornamental for ponds and other water features in landscaping. For millennia, Ayurvedic practitioners have employed the herb to relieve anxiety and tension while also improving mental clarity.

Alkaloids and saponins, including apigenin, bacosides, brahmine, cucurbitacin, herpestine, hersaponin, D-mannitol, plantainoside B and monnierasides I–III.

Bitter and gritty in flavor. Cooling virya (activity), pleasant rasa (taste), and sweet vipaka are all Ayurvedic properties (transformed after digestion).
