Larrea tridentata, a flowering evergreen shrub that is endemic to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is also known as the "creosote bush." This plant, which was a significant native American herb for ages, has an intriguing property in that it secretes sap that keeps rival species away from it. The plant from which we acquire organic Chaparral Leaf is practically indestructible; even if its limbs eventually wither, the bush's crown actually clones itself. In western San Bernardino County, California, there is a Larrea tridentata that appears to be more than 11,000 years old.
Indians from the Southwest desert areas once used the sap as a sunscreen and as a medicinal herb.
