Profile: Australian-native Eucalyptus globulus is an evergreen tree with leathery, fragrant, blue-green leaves. Eucalyptus grows incredibly quickly and can grow to enormous heights. The health benefits of eucalyptus leaf have been used by Australian aborigines for thousands of years. Typically consumed as a tea or tincture, eucalyptus leaves can also be applied topically.
Evergreen eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, but they have naturalized in California and the nations of the Mediterranean. It has blue-green leaves that are leathery and covered in glands that secrete a fragrant, volatile oil. There are many different eucalyptus tree species, but Eucalyptus globulus produces the oil with the best aroma. Aromatherapy, face or hydro-steams, and teas are common preparations. Encapsulation or extracts may be used, but we have only occasionally seen these. Mucus is released as a result of eucalyptus oil's action on nerve receptors in the sinus and nasal mucosa.
Eucalyptus, commonly known as ribbon gum and sparkling gum, is a member of the Myrtaceae family.
