Profile: One of the Native American herbs with a lengthy history is goldenseal leaf, which is native to the eastern woodlands of the United States and Canada.
The Iroquois and Algonquin-speaking Indians of present-day Ontario, Quebec, New York, and New England employed goldenseal leaf, also known as Hydrastis canadensis, as one of their main therapeutic herbs. A powdered form of dried goldenseal leaf was used for administration.
Although dried herbs like goldenseal leaf may have therapeutic benefits, clinical studies have not always supported these claims. Additionally, natural herbs, particularly those that are certified organic, can cause interactions and negative effects if not utilized carefully. Before initiating therapy with any herbal product or natural botanical extract, please see a skilled, certified herbalist or naturopathic physician.
