Rubia tinctoria is a perennial bedstraw vine with 3-foot-long roots. Madder root has been used for centuries to colour fabrics orange and crimson. Ancient India and Egypt had madder-dyed fabrics. Madder is a natural heritage dye plant.
Madder may dye plant and animal-based textiles with a mordant (typically alum). Madder root's alizarin and purpurin create orange to red colors. With the growing interest in natural plant-based colors, madder root is regaining prominence. Madder has no medicinal uses due to insufficient proof. Rubiaceae includes Rubia tinctoria.
