Profile: Although Rumex acetosella is often regarded as a weed, it has long been valued for its culinary uses and medicinal benefits.
Details:
Sheep sorrel, originally from Europe and Asia, is now widely grown in the Northern Hemisphere. Our sheep sorrel plant, also known as sheep sorrell, is a herb that can be used topically, steeped to make tea, or added to food as a sour flavoring.
Although 45 of the 50 states have listed sheep sorrel as an invasive species, the little, creeping plant has a long history of being viewed as a helpful herb. Sheep sorrel is one of the key ingredients in Chinese hot and sour soup, and it does have some culinary value as a garnish and a tart flavoring agent in salads and soups. In addition to making deliciously refreshing drinks and soups, sorrel's acidic flavor pairs perfectly with hot and spicy seeds and herbs. A member of the Polygonaceae family is sheep sorrel.
