Shepherd's purse is native to eastern Europe and western Asia but has naturalized elsewhere. The herb can be macerated as a liquid extract or steeped as shepherd's purse tea. It has a long history of use in folk herbalism.

Shepherd's purse is a mustard family weed, like cabbage, broccoli, and watercress. A biennial having a rosette of leaves at its base. It produces heart- or purse-shaped seedpods from four-petaled white blooms. Named for resembling a medieval shepherd's purse. Herbal preparations use all above-ground plant parts.
