Profile: Yucca, a plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family, grows in dry regions such as Texas and the Great Plains in the south and Alberta in the north.
The entire plant has traditionally been used; the roots have been used for its health benefits, the flowers and seed pods have been used as food, and the leaves have been used to construct ropes, mats, and baskets. Yucca is also known as soapweed because of the saponins that are found in its roots. Yucca glauca, the source of our yucca root powder, was gathered in the wild.
The succulent yucca is found all over the southern United States. Southwest tribes use the leaves of the yucca to manufacture dental floss, shampoo, and other products related to personal hygiene. Yucca is a member of the family Agavaceae.
