Description
Profile: Fo-ti is a blooming, woody Chinese vine. Polygonum multiflorum is called he shou wu in TCM (TCM). TCM uses fo-ti root to support wellness, nourish the heart, and quiet the spirit. Decocting and tincturing are common. Polygonaceae includes Fo-Ti.
Details: Red stems, heart-shaped leaves, white or pink blooms. Its name means "night-passing vine" Fo-ti was believed to unclog energy pathways in the body, allowing pathogenic influences that cause weakness, discomfort, pain, and exhaustion to exit.
Fo-ti is available raw, cured, wine-soaked, and steamed. Most US imports are raw and cured. The herb also dyes gray hair. Mr. He is a Chinese legend who restored his youth and sexual prowess by drinking fo-ti tea. Chinese tradition says to use the herb alone or cure it in black bean cooking water. Fo-ti curing increases phosphates (probably lecithin) and sugar by 30 percent. TCM reveres and secretly produces traditional fo-ti root. Raw fo-ti roots are cured in black bean sauce soup. Gluten-free.
