Details:
Licorice root is the most extensively used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Large quantities were found in King Tut's tomb for his afterlife journey as a flavoring for Mai-sus. Pliny the Elder advised it for voice and thirst relief. Dioscides advised licorice to Alexander the Great's troops for lengthy marches and dryness. In the Middle Ages, it helped with spicy or overdone food. Also used to flavor tobacco, fire extinguishers, and beer.
Licorice placed 10th in a recent study of Western medicinal herbalists. Over 5,000 Chinese herbal recipes utilize licorice to "harmonize" herbs and sweeten beverages. The great Chinese herbal expert Zhang Zhong Zhing first documented its use in 190 AD, but it had been utilized for centuries before. The Chicago Licorice Company began selling Black Vines in 1914, the first of many modern licorice candy. Whole sticks and slices are nice to chew.
Glycyrrhiza glabra is sometimes called Russian, Spanish, or Turkish licorice.
