Description

Profile: The strongest component of Queen of the Meadow has been utilized as an alternative medicine in the United States. To deter flies, dried and burned crushed leaves with an apple fragrance are used. To treat renal and urinary issues, the dried root and blossoms have been brewed into a diuretic tea.

Details:

Meadowsweet, sometimes referred to as Queen of the Meadow, Bridewort, and Meadwort, is a rose species native to the Old World that is prized for its fragrant flower clusters. The blooms have been used to flavor vinegars, beer, and a honey drink known as mead for ages in addition to being fashioned into bridal garlands. Flowers and leaves were frequently scattered on the ground to cover obnoxious odors brought on by poor hygiene. Meadowsweet is said to have been Queen Elizabeth's favorite smell for her personal spaces.

Acetylsalicylic acid was created from the herb by a German scientist in the late 1800s; his firm, Bayer AG, eventually commercialized it under the brand name "aspirin." Meadowsweet is now used to make topical ointments and salves as well as tea blends.
