Description
Profile: Safflower is an annual broadleaf plant in the aster family that produces rounded yellow or reddish-orange flower heads and rosettes of branched leaves, like a thistle.
Details: Safflower is a brilliant yellow to orange flowering herbaceous annual with a thick tap root. Carthamus tinctorius, which looks like a thistle, flourishes in desert areas. Since ancient Egypt, saffflowers have been used as a textile dye, and they are occasionally used in cookery as a cheaper alternative to saffron. Safflower is known as hong hua in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is used for its warming and bitter energetics. Safflower petals and stamens can be used to make safflower tea, infusions, spices, or exterior applications.
