Description

Profile: The slippery elm is a deciduous elm tree that is native to eastern North America. The inner bark of organic Ulmus rubra is used to make our slippery elm bark. Native Americans have always used the bark for its varied health benefits. For its mucilaginous qualities, it is sometimes steeped as slippery elm tea and drunk nowadays.

Details:

From Texas to Manitoba, and from Florida to Quebec, the slippery elm is a big deciduous tree endemic to North America. It can reach a height of 60 feet when grown in well-drained soils (20 meters). In the spring, the inner bark of the branches is harvested. When slippery elm bark is mixed with room temperature water, it becomes slippery and mucilaginous. As natural dressings, Native Americans used moistened slippery elm bark. To keep food from spoiling, many tribes tied slippery elm around it. During times of hunger, slippery elm was also used to make porridge for tiny children and the elderly. The Ulmaceae family includes the slippery elm.

Teas, infusions, and topical treatments are all options. In a cup (240 ml) of water, dissolve up to 5 teaspoons (15 grams) of slippery elm bark. It's also available encapsulated and as a liquid extract.
