Details:
The willow is a low-growing deciduous tree native to North America, northern Asia, and parts of Africa, with long, green, tapering leaves and catkins in the spring. In the spring, the bark of young trees is taken away. Willow bark was employed by Native American healers long before Columbus or the Vikings arrived. Willow bark was first converted to aspirin in 1828, when German chemist Felix Hoffmann identified the active constituent, which he dubbed salicin. In 1899, the Bayer corporation began producing and selling acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin, a modified form of the willow bark chemical. Since then, this first of contemporary miracle medications has been a mainstay in the treatment of joint pain. The Salicaceae family includes white willow (also known as bai liu pi in Traditional Chinese Medicine).
