Profile: The herbaceous perennial Acorus calamus grows in marshes, swamps, and other wetland habitats. Sword-shaped leaves and tiny greenish-yellow blooms cover the entire plant, which is scented. Calamus propagates primarily by its rhizomatous root system, and the roots have long been utilized in herbal medicine. The leaves, sometimes known as sweet flag, were once spread around floors for their pleasant perfume. Under the direction of a skilled professional, calamus root can be utilized in topical applications, to fragrance cosmetic items, and in some internal uses.

Details: Calamus, also known as acorus, sweet calamus, sweetflag, and vacha, is a part of the Araceae family. Acorus calamus is a native of Eastern countries that has subsequently spread to Europe, Japan, and the Northern United States. In his classic work, "Leaves of Grass," Walt Whitman penned 39 poems for calamus.
