Description
Profile: Grapefruit is a relatively new addition to the realm of citrus fruits, and its origins are unknown. Citrus x paradisi produces huge fruits that are sour, bitter, and delicious all at the same time. Fruits that seem like a cross between oranges and pomelos are common. Bath and body products, beverages, extracts, and culinary treats all benefit from the bright and distinctive citrus overtones of dried grapefruit peel.
Details: The grapefruit isn't nearly 300 years old, and its "discovery" during the 1700s was deemed a horticultural accident. Captain Shaddock, an English youth from Polynesia, transported the seeds to the West Indies in 1693. There are no records to back up this theory, but many people believe the grapefruit is a hybrid between a pomelo and a sweet orange, though no one knows for sure.
After the mariner who brought it to the Caribbean, it became known as the "forbidden fruit" or a smaller shaddock by 1750. It didn't arrive on American beaches until 1823, when it was carried from the Bahamas to Tampa, Florida, where it thrived in the heat. It was not generally adopted until the nineteenth century. The United States is now the world's leading producer of the fruit. The present name derives from the way the fruit clusters on the tree resemble a bunch of grapes. The grapefruit, which is still considered one of Barbados' seven wonders, is high in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, iron, and calcium.
