Description

Profile: Vaccinium myrtillus, sometimes known as the European blueberry, is a plant native to Europe and the British Isles. Bilberry, sometimes known as billberry, provides tasty blue berries that can be eaten alone or used in traditional European herbal medicine. Bilberry fruit can be used in infusions, smoothies, baking dishes, trail mixes, and granola, and is a healthy addition to any cuisine. Bilberries can be used to flavor liqueurs, vinegars, and syrups.

Details:

The European bilberry bush, also known as "Black Hearts" in Thomas Hardy's 1878 novel The Return of the Native, is a near relative of American blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. It thrives on damp acidic soil in temperate and sub-arctic climates around the world. The bilberry has a long history of usage in folk medicine. Because of its beautiful dark blue/purple hue, the English employed it as a wool dye. Huckleberry and whortleberry are two other frequent names for the plant.

The antioxidant activity of bilberry's phenolic acid helps to maintain cell integrity and fight free radicals.
