Description

Profile: Black cohosh gets its name from its twisted, black root, which resembles a snake. The herbaceous perennial prefers to grow in wooded settings and is native to central and eastern North America. Organic Actaea racemosa roots are crushed into our black cohosh powder. The powdered root of black cohosh can be encapsulated, tinctured, or turned into pills.

Details:

The flowering perennial Black Cohosh is endemic to much of Canada and the United States. It flourishes in old-growth coastal forests and areas with a high level of biodiversity. The United States and Canada produce and cultivate the majority of the world's black cohosh. The plant reaches a height of three to six feet and has a stem covered in tiny white blooms. The optimal time to harvest the root is between late July and September.

Native Americans used it as a traditional herbal treatment. The name cohosh comes from the Algonquian tribe and means "rough," which refers to the rhizome's texture. Because the blossoms have such a strong odor and have been used to effectively repel insects, it was given the moniker "bugbane." Black snakeroot and rheumatic weed are two more frequent names for this plant.
