Description

Profile: The vervain family plant Verbena hastata has tiny, blueish-purple blooms that bloom in the summer. Blue vervain is a plant native to North America that has been used for ages by both Native Americans and subsequent folk herbalists for its medicinal benefits. Blue vervain tea was traditionally brewed from the herb, but it can also be tinctured, turned into a syrup, or added to creams and bath treatments for the body.

Details:

Native to North America, Verbena hastata resembles its European relative Verbena officinalis remarkably in both look and qualities, leading to frequent confusion between the two plants. It can be found growing wildly on prairies, in meadows, and open forests throughout the Great Plains region of America. Blue vervain also goes by the names American blue vervain and wild hyssop.

Vervain is known by a number of names, including Herb of the Cross, Herb of Grace, and Holy Wort, all of which allude to the myth that when Jesus was taken down from the cross, vervain was used to bandage his wounds. Biblical academics disagree with this because it is not mentioned anywhere in contemporary bibles. Pagan love potions also contained it as a component.
