Description

Profile: Comfrey, also known as wild boneset, bruisewort, and radix consolidate, is a blooming perennial native to Eurasia that is now found throughout North America's temperate zones. Comfrey has been used to treat pleurisy and bronchial irritation in the respiratory system. It was also used to treat digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome and stomach ulcers in the past. It has also been used to aid in the healing of injuries for thousands of years.

Details:

Despite the fact that comfrey has been used to make teas and infusions for centuries, the presence of more than a half-dozen pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the leaf and root poses a danger of liver poisoning in both animals and humans. In fact, the root has up to 16 times the amount of pyrrolizidine alkaloids as the leaf.
However, different tannins, rosmarinic acid, and, most importantly, a component called allantoin support the traditional use of comfrey in topical preparations. The latter is found in toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen creams, and a variety of other cosmetic and pharmaceutical items.
