Description

Profile: Harpagophytum procumbens belongs to the sesame family and is native to southern Africa. It was given the common name devil's claw because of its hooked fruit. Tuberous roots of the plant have been utilized in African folk medicine for millennia. Devils claw root has been used for its medicinal benefits for centuries, and common formulations include decoctions and extractions.

Details:

Devil's claw is a plant endemic to eastern and southern Africa, with populations in Namibia, Botswana, and, most notably, South Africa. It thrives in grasslands and can be found growing along roadsides and in locations where other plants have been removed. It gets its name from the fact that the fruit's interior capsule breaks apart at one end, giving it a unique appearance. Two curving horns or claws form as a result of this. The roots of devil's claw are typically used after being sliced and dried for at least three days in the sun. Devil's claw is one of the most bitter herbs available, making it an excellent digestive stimulant.
