Asiatic pennywort, Indian pennywort, ji xue cao, sombrerito, and mandukaparni are other names for gotu kola. Centella asiatica grows in hot, damp areas in South and Southeast Asia. India, Japan, China, Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the South Pacific are home. Centella grows near slow-moving water (one of its Ayurvedic names is'mandukaparni,' which means frog-leafed). It features circular green leaves, white, light purple, or pink flowers, and oval fruit. As a carrot or Apiaceace family member, it's linked to parsley, cumin, fennel, angelica, and cilantro (Coriandrum sativum). It's called'sombrerito' in Spanish, which refers to the leaf's form. "Gotu kola" means cup-shaped leaf in Singhalese. Elephants, known for their long lives and amazing memories, eat the plant in Sri Lanka. Locals eat a few leaves daily to imitate them.
Gotu kola may be confused with the caffeine-containing kola nut (Cola nitida) or bacopa (Bacopa monnieri), which is sold as 'brahmi' or'mandukaparni' in Ayurveda. Gotu kola isn't a stimulant like kola nut and isn't related to bacopa. In Ayurveda, these two herbs have similar energy properties.
In India, China, and Indonesia, Centella asiatica has been utilized for centuries. It calms mental turmoil in Ayurveda. It's a tri-doshic plant that balances vata, pitta, and kapha.
Chinese Shennong Herbal records gotu kola's ancient use (1st-2nd century CE). A tale claims a gotu kola-eating herbalist lived over 200 years. TCM uses ji xue cao.
In several Asian nations, it's consumed raw and sold as fresh juice. Gotu kola is a nutrient-rich, sweet and bitter herb used in Asian recipes. Gotu kola leaves, shallots, lime juice, chili, and coconut flakes are typical ingredients.
Gotu kola is relaxing in Asia. It's sweet, bitter, astringent, and cooling.
