Description

Profile: Smilax regelii is a perennial vine with sharp thorns and heart-shaped leaves that is native to Central and South America. Sarsaparilla root, which was once a key ingredient in root beer, is still used in beverages today. The indigenous peoples of the area used sarsaparilla for its medicinal benefits. Our Jamaican sarsaparilla root can be used as an infusion, syrup, or tincture.

Details:

A woody, perennial climbing vine endemic to South America, Central America, and the Caribbean, this species is a woody, perennial climbing vine. When the Spanish conquistadores came, they discovered that indigenous tribes utilized sarsaparilla-based beverages as a general tonic. The name comes from the Spanish words sarza, which means brambles, and parilla, which means vine. Erect, semiwoody stems with vicious thorns up to 1/2 inch long characterize this perennial climbing vine. Large, heart-shaped, and nearly evergreen leaves with pronounced veins. Smilax regelii, often known as brown sarsaparilla or Honduran sarsaparilla, is a member of the Smilacaceae plant family.
