The tree's leaves are formed like "mittens" while it's young, with two "thumbs" on occasion. The leaves become more rounded and free of indentation as the tree ages, occasionally reaching a height of 100 feet (30 meters) with a trunk diameter of up to 6 feet (200 cm). The Lauraceae family includes sassafras.
