Saw palmetto helps the prostate function properly.

The Saw Palmetto is a tiny palm species native to the southeastern United States, with a concentration in Florida and a few nearby areas. Because they grow prostrate most of the time, the plants are normally between three and six feet tall, yet they can grow up to fifteen feet tall on rare instances. Plants like saw palmetto can live for hundreds of years, with the oldest in Florida estimated to be 500 to 700 years old. Saw palmetto thrives on sandy soil and bears fruit all summer long, far into October. When fully ripe, the fruit is bluish-black. It has a characteristic sweet scent and a slightly soapy and bitter flavor.

Native Americans in Florida used saw palmetto berries as a source of food and a general tonic, and early American settlers ate them to avoid famine. One of the first to notice the fruit's beneficial benefits on grazing animals was American botanist John Lloyd, who concluded that it could help humans as well. The herb went out of popularity in the 1950s when science couldn't explain the berries' reported effects.

The Arecaceae family includes saw palmetto, often known as sabal palm.
