Profile: Low-growing, evergreen Arctostaphylos uva ursi is found in hilly areas all over the northern hemisphere. The Ericaceae family includes the urn-shaped blooms and thick leaves of Uva ursi.

Bears are reported to occasionally munch on the berries, which when in fruit look like a bunch of grapes. The names Arctostaphylos and uva ursi both mean "grape of the bear." The astringent and tanning uva ursi leaf, which is also known as bearberry, can be tinctured, used topically, or made into a tea.
