Description

Profile: The tall, wild cousin of common lettuce known as Lactuca virosa has vivid yellow flowers, serrated leaves, and a stem that when broken releases a white latex. The biennial, Asteraceae-family plant known as wild lettuce was domesticated in Europe and spread naturally throughout North America. The bitter and nervine properties of wild lettuce herb have been employed for ages in traditional folk herbalism. Typically, the leaf and stem of wild lettuce are tinctured or steeped to make wild lettuce tea.

Details:

Wild lettuce is a forest member of the sunflower family, not a vegetable. The term "lettuce opium," as it was referred to in earlier official pharmacopoeias, alludes to the strong milky latex that the stems and leaves produce.
