Description
Profile: Aloe ferox is a gorgeous African plant. The Greek word for Cape aloe, ferox, means "fierce" because of its spiky leaves. Bitter aloe has been used in traditional South African herbalism for centuries.
Details:
The Asphodelaceae family includes Cape aloe. It's 10 feet tall when mature. Thick, fleshy spined leaves form rosettes on the stalk. Younger plants have more spines. Aloe ferox flowers resemble candelabras with spikes of orange to scarlet racemes. Cape aloe grows in rocky, dry, full-sun environments with good drainage.
South African tribes have traditionally exploited cape aloe's healing powers. Local mythology uses the plant as a protecting herb and in ritual body washing. Today, cosmetics and other topical applications employ cape aloe gel. The dried leaf is used for external and interior body maintenance.
Wild-harvested in South Africa's western cape. Powdered leaf is used in skin care. Teas and extracts contain it.
