Details:
Eleutherococcus has around 30 attractive species. E. senticosus is a 3-to-15-foot-tall shrub with palmate leaves and bristly stems. It's an understory shrub endemic to Japan, China, Korea, and the Far East of Russia. Eleuthero is in the ginseng or Araliaceae family with Panax quinquefolius and Devil's walkingstick. In Chinese herbal formulae, eleuthero is mentioned as Acanthopanax senticosus.
Dormant plants yield the best roots. Remove lateral rootlets and clean the root. In China, the root cortex is considered the best component of the plant, therefore root bark can be eliminated for a stronger preparation.
Commercial eleuthero comes from northeast China and Russia. In recent decades, it has been grown experimentally under Japan and Canada in semiarid environments.
Listed in the Chinese Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica) over 2000 years ago, eleuthero has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for millennia, but was rarely discovered until Russian researchers began studying it in the 1960s. In 1947, N.V. Lazarev invented the term 'adaptogen' to describe eleuthero's effects. Adaptogens boost "non-specific resistance to unfavorable effects," he said. It's also called 'Siberian ginseng,' but it's not interchangeable with Panax ginseng or 'real ginseng'
In TCM, eleuthero root is used to activate qi, strengthen the spleen and kidney, and balance vital energy. China uses eleuthero to promote health. It's also used for insomnia with vivid dreams. It's peppery and bitter, and it's commonly made with sweet rice wine. It warms the spleen, kidney, and heart meridians. Some leaves of numerous eleuthero species have been utilized in herbal teas.
In northeastern Asia and eastern Russia, eleuthero is used as a tonic. Traditional Korean medicine uses it to boost qi.
Eleuthero is used to improve endurance and health in western herbalism. France, Germany, and Russia prescribe it.
It's bitter and pungent. Warm-energy Eleuthero.
