The 40-foot-tall kola tree grows in tropical Africa. Its purple-tinged yellow blossoms yield reddish-brown seeds approximately the size of a walnut that are rich in caffeine. The Sterculiaceae tree is called ghanja cola.

The Igbo believe the kola nut tree the first tree (and fruit) on earth. The nut symbolizes hospitality, friendliness, and brotherhood. Western Africa chews a nut before meals to aid digestion. Mid-16th-century Portuguese traders introduced it to Europe. The nut is also believed to improve food flavor and purify water.
