Description

Profile: Siberian ginseng grows in Japan, China, Korea, and Russia's mountains. Known as eleuthero, the root has been used in Chinese, Korean, and Russian herbal medicine for generations. Eleuthero root is warming and an adaptogen. Eleuthero powder is made from organic roots. Root powder can be extracted or capsuled.

Eleuthero, an adaptogen, has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It was utilized in Korean and Russian folk medicine to boost stamina and overall health. Russian researchers introduced the West to this amazing root in the 1960s. Most health food stores in North America sell it.

Details:

Some Eleutherococcus species are ornamental in the West. E. senticosus is a 3-to-15-foot-tall shrub with palmate leaves and bristled stems. Native to Japan, China, Korea, and the Far East of Russia, it grows in mountain thickets and scanty forests up to 2,500 feet. Eleuthero is in the same family as American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Devil's walkingstick (Aralia spinosa). The Chinese list eleuthero as Acanthopanax senticosus in various herbal formulae.

When the plant is dormant, harvest the root. The root should be trimmed and cleansed. Further, in China, the best portion of the plant is the root cortex, therefore the root bark can be eliminated to make a more potent concoction.

The commercial eleuthero comes from northeast China and Russia. In recent decades, Japan and Canada began growing it in semiarid settings like its natural habitat.

Listed in the Chinese Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica) over 2000 years ago, eleuthero has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for millennia, but was rarely discovered until Russian researchers began studying it in the 1960's. N.V. Lazarev created the term 'adaptogen' in 1947 to describe eleuthero's effects. He said adaptogens boost "non-specific tolerance to unfavorable effects." It's also called 'Siberian ginseng' and is often compared to Panax ginseng, although they're not interchangeable.

Eleuthero root is used in TCM to invigorate qi (chi or energy), strengthen and nourish the spleen and kidney, and balance vital energy. Eleuthero supports overall health in China. Also used for insomnia with too many dreams. Pungent and slightly bitter, it's commonly made with sweet rice wine. It's warming to the spleen, kidney, and heart meridians. In herbal teas, the leaves of numerous eleuthero species have also been employed.

Eleuthero is called'shigoka' and used as a tonic in northeastern Asia and far eastern Russia. In traditional Korean medicine, it strengthens qi.

Eleuthero is used in western herbalism to increase health and stamina. It's used in France, Germany, and Russia.

Pungent and slightly bitter. Eleuthero is warm.
