Description

Profile: The thorny vine sarsaparilla is indigenous to Central and South America. Sarsaparilla root, a member of the lily family, has been employed by native cultures in traditional herbal remedies. The root's mild, bittersweet flavor made it a popular component of root beer in the past. Smilax ornata is used to mill our sarsaparilla powder. You can turn powdered Jamaican sarsaparilla root into pills, syrups, capsules, extracts, or infusions.

Details: The native regions of this particular species are the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is a woody, perennial climbing vine. Spanish conquistadors discovered that local tribes utilized sarsaparilla-based drinks as a general health tonic when they first arrived. The word itself is a combination of the Spanish words for vine and brambles, sarza and parilla. This perennial climbing vine has semiwoody, upright stems with thorns that can reach a length of half an inch. Large, nearly evergreen, heart-shaped leaves with distinct veining are available. Smilax ornata, a plant belonging to the Smilacaceae family, is commonly known as Honduran sarsaparilla or brown sarsaparilla.
