Description
Profile: Large, hairy leaves, a twisted inflorescence with white to purple bell-shaped flowers, and black roots define comfrey. Symphytum officinale has been employed in traditional Western herbalism for thousands of years for its excellent, wholesome characteristics. Our comfrey root powder is made from roots that have been grown organically.
Details:
Comfrey is related to both borage (Borago sp.) and heliotrope, it belongs to the Borage or Boraginaceae family (Heliotropium sp.). All 35 Symphytum species can be used interchangeably, however Russian comfrey (S.x uplandicum) and prickly comfrey have the most pyrrolizidine alkaloid (S. asperum). Comfrey has huge, rough, hairy, lance-shaped leaves with whitish, pink, or purple flower spikes with the distinctive heliotrope curl. It is endemic to much of Europe and parts of Asia, including the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Siberia, and Turkey, and grows as a weed in temperate northern climates.
