Description
Profile: Levisticum officinale is an Apiaceae perennial with celery-like scent. Lovage leaves and seeds were used as a spice throughout Europe for centuries. The thick, carrot-shaped lovage root was widely utilized as a vegetable. Infusions, extracts, and cordials use lovage root.
Details: Lovage is related to carrots, parsley, and dill. Dark green leaves resemble cilantro, and celery stalks. Sweeter and stronger than celery. Originally from Europe, it currently grows wild in New England, the Great Lakes states, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. It's been used in love potions for millennia. In the 1800s, lovage, tansy, and yarrow cordial was a popular stomach cure. Charlemagne liked lovage so much he planted it on his land.
