Description
Profile: Senna alexandrina is a member of the Fabaceae or pea family that is native to northern Egypt and grown in India, Sudan, and Somalia. Senna is a shrub with long, spreading branches and yellow blossoms that turn into rectangular, flat fruits when ripe. Its leaves and fruit pods have long been used in traditional therapeutic methods because to their medicinal characteristics. Senna pods can be removed or boiled to make senna pod tea, which is commonly used for its mild laxative effect.
Details: Senna promotes bowel movement by blocking the smooth muscles that hold stool in place and stimulating those that push stool through the intestine. The herb won't work unless helpful bacteria in the colon convert the sennosides in the herb into rheinanthrones.
