Profile: China, Mongolia, and North Korea are home to the sun-loving perennial Astragalus membranaceus. Astragalus root was utilized in traditional Chinese medicine as a Qi tonic. The dried root can be tinctured, made into tea, and added to soups, stews, and broths.
Chinese and Asian cultures have long used astragalus. It's native to China, Mongolia, and North Korea and used in TCM (TCM). The herb was referenced in the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica, published anonymously in the first century AD and credited to 5,000-year-old Shennong.
Astragalus boosts immunological health and the body's immune defenses to keep you healthy. Astragalus is utilized in TCM to boost vitality and stress resistance.
Astragalus is a 25-40 cm herbaceous perennial. It thrives in grassy areas and on slopes and needs sun. The roots are harvested in spring or fall after four or five years of growing. Sun-dried roots are cut and distributed. The yellow slices are delicious, juicy, and fibrous.
Most TCM authorities recommend taking 9-15 grams (3 to 5 tablespoons) of the whole herb per day as a decoction, formed by boiling the powdered, dried root in water and then brewing the tea. Capsules or extracts are available. Astragalus is utilized in TCM for many diseases. It supports immunological function and the heart in healthy people. Membranous milkvetch is also called huang qi.
