Description
Profile: Tall deciduous juglans nigra trees are indigenous to eastern North America. Native American populations have historically used black walnut leaves, bark, nuts, and hulls as a source of food and health benefits. Astringent black walnut leaf can be produced as an infusion or used topically.
Details:
North America is the natural home of the black walnut tree. The Latin words lupiter, which means Jupiter, and glans, which means acorn, are combined to form the name of the genus Juglans. Therefore, "Jupiter's nuts" is the literal translation. Walnut groves in Babylon's hanging gardens were reportedly mentioned on a Chaldean clay tablet. Pliny the Elder (c. 23–79 C.E.) recorded the cultivation of trees brought from regions further east in Italy. They were known as the "royal walnut" in ancient Persia and were only supposed to be consumed by royalty. There is archeological proof that Native Americans in America used and devoured them as early as 2000 B.C.E. Compared to the English walnuts found in grocery stores, black walnuts are smaller, tougher, and more flavorful. In conventional herbalism, the hulls without the meaty kernels inside are employed. Black walnut trees secrete a sap that prevents rival plants from growing over their roots. Among the Juglandaceae family is the black walnut.
