Profile: According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Carolina Reaper is the world's hottest pepper. It's scorching, and we mean scorching! The Carolina Reaper has a maximum SHU of 2.2 million!
Details:
Carolina Reaper was rumored to be the world's hottest chili for months. This sparked intense debates among chile lovers worldwide.
After a marketing campaign by grower Ed Currie, Guinness Book of World Records announced a new "world's hottest chili pepper" in November 2013, effectively ending the debate. The Carolina Reaper is the world's hottest chili, averaging 1,569,300 Scoville units per pepper. Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, the previous record holder, lost. Individual Trinidad Moruga Scorpion peppers ranged from 1.2 million to 2,009,231 Scoville Units. Carolina Reaper was produced by crossing a Pakistani Naga with a St. Vincent Red Habanero. It tastes fruity.
This is a very spicy chili pepper, so handle with caution. Keep the temperature between 28 and 32 degrees for good germination.
When making spicy recipes, the Carolina Reaper can be used, but be careful not to overuse it. Make your own spicy sauce with Carolina Reapers if you're a hot sauce aficionado (but make sure use the peppers sparingly). Carolina Reapers are great in pepper jellies and can be canned or preserved (again, sparingly).
